Next Generation’s immediate priority is to ensure that young men are prepared to successfully complete college preparatory coursework and state-mandated graduation examinations in high school, and that they are eligible to enroll in top public and private high schools in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia (Alexandria City and Fairfax County), and Southern Maryland (Prince Georges and Montgomery County). How students perform in middle school affects their course placement and selection in high school, as well as their ability to successfully complete higher level courses that prepare them for college.
As such, Next Generation is presently targeting young men in grades 6 – 8, as this is the demographic that is at the greatest risk of under-achieving academically, becoming disassociated with school, and adopting attitudes and behaviors that run counter to high performance in the classroom (see “Needs” section for relevant research).
